The External Member of the Administrative Board of NTUA, Alumnus Panagiotis Papanikolas, is leading the construction of the Patras–Pyrgos Highway
The delivery of 65 out of the total 75 kilometers of the Patras–Pyrgos motorway marks a new era of safety, speed, and development for Western Greece. A landmark project, completed in just three years, with more than 5 million working hours and the participation of over 1,400 employees, now connects Athens with Pyrgos in 2 hours and 45 minutes. With the completion of the new Patras–Pyrgos section, Olympia Odos becomes the third largest motorway in the country, with a total length of 277 kilometers. The operation of the project is expected to substantially boost the local economy, increasing GDP by 2–3% in the regions of Achaia and Ilia, with the potential for even greater growth in Ilia, reaching up to 5%, according to the Road Axis Observatory.
The implementation of this critical project for the country’s regional development was led by the External Member of the NTUA Administrative Board of Directors, alumnus and PhD holder of the Institution, Mr. Panagiotis Papanikolas. With his long-standing experience and his vision for modern infrastructure, Panagiotis Papanikolas has served as a model of technocratic efficiency, collaboration, and dedication to public benefit.
The National Technical University of Athens is proud that a distinguished representative of its community actively contributes to shaping the Greece of tomorrow and has associated his name with some of the country’s most important infrastructure projects, such as the Rio–Antirrio Bridge and Olympia Odos.
